Un giorno del 1919 la madre di Samuel Barber, un ragazzo di nove anni, trovò sulla propria scrivania una lettera del figlio:

Dear Mother: I have written this to tell you my worrying secret. Now don’t cry when you read it because it is neither yours nor my fault. I suppose I will have to tell it now without any nonsense. To begin with I was not meant to be an athlet. I was meant to be a composer, and will be I’m sure. I’ll ask you one more thing. – Don’t ask me to try to forget this unpleasant thing and go play football. – Please – Sometimes I’ve been worrying about this so much that it makes me mad (not very).

Effettivamente, Samuel fu un ragazzo insolito ed ebbe, per la sua fortuna, una brava madre che seppe leggere la lettera e non le lettere. Samuel Barber riuscì dunque a studiare seriamente la musica e diventare un buon compositore.
Nel 1936 compose «Adagio per archi», ritenuto «una delle composizioni più tristi della musica classica». Io ho scelto la versione della orchestra Los Angeles Philharmonic diretta da Leonard Bernstein:

Per farvi sentire qualcosa decisamente meno triste, aggiungerei in qualità della seconda composizione il «Copricorn Concerto» del 1944 (suona la Pacific Symphony Orchestra).

Dedicarsi a ciò che piace non è sempre una brutta idea.
