What is the «Web Typographer»?[⤣ hide]
The «Web Typographer» is an online tool that simplifies and speeds up the preparation of texts for web publication. It — the tool — is designed for anyone who cares about how their texts appear on screen, but who lacks the time or patience for the laborious manual process of fixing hyphens (often confused with dashes), quotation marks (often mistaken for inch signs), apostrophes (often confused with minute signs), non-breaking spaces (to be used after articles, conjunctions, and prepositions, as well as in many other cases), double spaces, missing spaces, and a host of other tedious and repetitive tasks.
With just one click of a button, anyone — even the laziest or least typographically savvy person — can make a text intended for publication far more attractive and readable.
And since this version of my «Web Typographer» is capable of applying typographic rules for multiple European languages, and of performing several additional operations for preparing texts for the web, I recommend that new or occasional users take a moment to read through the «Settings» section before getting started.
Here is a simple list of everything my «Web Typographer» currently knows how to do:
— replace special characters with their corresponding HTML mnemonic or numeric codes
— convert URLs into clickable links
— convert email addresses into clickable links
— convert phone numbers into clickable links
— insert line breaks (if the user has enabled the option)
— add paragraph tags (if the user has enabled the option)
— remove spaces before punctuation marks
— insert spaces after punctuation marks
— remove the space before the percentage symbol
— remove spaces inside brackets (round and square)
— add missing spaces before (and after) brackets
— link conjunctions to the following word with a non-breaking space
— link prepositions to the following word with a non-breaking space
— link articles to the following word with a non-breaking space
— replace «x» with «×» in dimensional units
— replace the fractions 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1/3, 2/3, 1/5, 2/5, 3/5, 4/5, 1/6, 5/6, 1/8, 3/8, 5/8, 7/8 with the appropriate HTML symbols
— replace (R) with the registered trademark symbol
— replace (c) with the copyright symbol
— replace (tm) with the trademark symbol
— replace (p) with the sound recording copyright symbol
— handle end-of-line hyphens (for verse formatting)
— insert a proper minus sign between numbers
— insert the correct typographic apostrophe in place of the straight computer version
— replace the paragraph symbol with the corresponding HTML code and number
— replace the number sign with the appropriate HTML entity and value

How to support the project?[⤣ hide]
People who would like to support me in improving my «Web Typographer» can do so in one (or more) of the following ways:
— by sending me an email pointing out any mistakes, inaccuracies, or inconsistencies in the typographic preparation of the texts (including at least one concrete example would greatly help me understand and quickly fix the issue);
— by sharing any suggestions or advice you may have on how to improve or expand the functionality, appearance, or usability of my «Web Typographer»;
— by sending me a monetary contribution that you consider reasonable, which will help me devote a bit more time to enhancing the «Web Typographer» (the yellow button like the one you see below is always available at the top of the right-hand column on every page of the site).
