Hours to convert
What system to convert hour to?
What is it?
The «Time Converter» is a digital tool that allows you to convert time written in any officially existing system to any other time writing system.
What are the different formats for writing time?
There are three official time-writing systems:
1) the 24-hour time system which divides the day into 24 hours starting at midnight and going until the following midnight; consequently, the hour is written according to the formula hh:mm (hh stand for hours and mm for minutes). Some examples: 00:27, 02:15, 13:25, 23:38. The day starts at midnight (00:00) and ends one minute later at 23:59.
2) the 12-hour time system that divides the day into two 12-hour intervals: between midnight and midday and between midday and the following midnight. Consequently, the time is written according to the formula hh:mm (hours:minutes) with the addition of AM (ante meridiem, before noon) or PM (post meridiem, after noon). Some examples: 0:27 AM, 2:15 AM, 1:25 PM, 11:38 PM. The day starts at midnight (12:00 PM) and ends one minute after 11:59 PM;
3) the «military time» time system, which is adopted by the US armed forces and is almost identical to the 24-hour time system: the only differences are the absence of the divisor between hours and minutes and the requirement to indicate the leading zero for one-digit hours (i.e. between midnight and 10:00 AM). In addition, a letter indicating the time zone is often added at the end. Some examples: 0027R, 0215R, 1325R, 2338R. The day begins at midnight (1200) and ends one minute after 2359.

What are the rules for time conversion?
The conversion of hours from one system to another is done according to simple logic (and, in some situations, arithmetic) based on knowledge of the three time-recording systems:
— 24-hour system → 12-hour system: if the number of hours is less than 12, add AM at the end; if the number of hours is more than 12, subtract 12 and add PM at the end; if the number of hours is 12, add PM at the end;
— 12-hour system → 24-hour system: if it ends in PM, add 12 to the hours (if it is not noon) and remove the letters; if it ends in AM, remove the letters;
— 24-hour system → military time system: remove the colon dividing hours and minutes and add a zero at the beginning if the total digits are three;
— military time → 24-hour system: remove the final letter (if any) and add the colon before the penultimate digit;
— 12-hour system → military time system: if it ends in PM, add 12 to the hours (if it is not noon) and remove the letters; if it ends in AM, remove the letters; in both cases, remove the colon;
— military time system → 12-hour system: if the number of hours is less than 12, add AM at the end; if the number of hours is more than 12, subtract 12 and add PM at the end; if the number of hours is 12, add PM at the end; always add the colon between hours and minutes.
— 24-hour system → 12-hour system: if the number of hours is less than 12, add AM at the end; if the number of hours is more than 12, subtract 12 and add PM at the end; if the number of hours is 12, add PM at the end;
