Despite its geographical size and a&nbsp;certain economic and cultural importance, however, I&nbsp;found a&nbsp;place that feels more like a&nbsp;large provincial town. A&nbsp;beautiful provincial town, admittedly.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma01.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the old town of Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka2\"><\/a>A&nbsp;visit to&nbsp;the local cathedral is&nbsp;strongly recommended to&nbsp;everyone. In&nbsp;addition to&nbsp;contemplating the astonishingly beautiful interior, you may amuse yourself by&nbsp;observing the custodians who vigilantly supervise the non-enforcement of&nbsp;the ban on&nbsp;interior photography. The city therefore earns another point: absurd rules now exist only on&nbsp;paper.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma02.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the cathedral of Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka3\"><\/a>I&nbsp;cannot tell you anything whatsoever about the Baptistery (beyond the simple observation that it&nbsp;is&nbsp;still standing). Unfortunately, I&nbsp;found it&nbsp;closed.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma03.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the Baptistery of Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka4\"><\/a>It&nbsp;was in&nbsp;Parma that I&nbsp;began to&nbsp;suspect the existence of&nbsp;an&nbsp;Emilian architectural tradition: leaving brick fa&ccedil;ades unplastered (let&nbsp;us recall, for instance, <a href=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/en\/travel\/piacenza2015\/\">Piacenza<\/a>).<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma04.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma04a.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"the old town of Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka5\"><\/a>The local tradition, meanwhile, consists in&nbsp;using old ruins as&nbsp;foundations for more modern buildings.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma05.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the old town of Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka6\"><\/a>Classical beauties are not lacking either&nbsp;&mdash; and in&nbsp;some cases they are even practical. On&nbsp;the fa&ccedil;ade of&nbsp;the &laquo;Palazzo del Governatore&raquo; (now an&nbsp;exhibition space) there are no&nbsp;fewer than three sundials (or&nbsp;perhaps 1 + &frac12; + &frac12;?).<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma06.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma06a.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma06b.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma06c.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"the Palazzo del governatore in Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka7\"><\/a>The wise advice of&nbsp;a&nbsp;Parmese architect: if&nbsp;you are not certain you can carry out a&nbsp;high-quality restoration, carry out an&nbsp;absurd one instead&nbsp;&mdash; people will assume it&nbsp;was an&nbsp;intentional joke.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma07.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka8\"><\/a>Attentive explorers may notice some rather curious shutters on&nbsp;certain buildings in&nbsp;Parma.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma08.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka9\"><\/a>Some monuments are well protected, although I&nbsp;am not entirely sure whether from theft or&nbsp;from falling over.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma09.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka10\"><\/a>My&nbsp;loyal readers will remember that I&nbsp;never research cities in&nbsp;advance when visiting them for the first time: I&nbsp;prefer to&nbsp;form my&nbsp;own impression rather than follow someone else&rsquo;s. One consequence of&nbsp;this approach was discovering the existence of&nbsp;the Charterhouse of&nbsp;Parma only thanks to&nbsp;a&nbsp;road sign (Stendhal&rsquo;s novel came to&nbsp;mind only later). The walk along a&nbsp;road in&nbsp;disastrous condition towards the Charterhouse proved pointless, however: it&nbsp;now houses a&nbsp;training school for the penitentiary police. I&nbsp;was unable to&nbsp;determine whether, and how, one might enter as&nbsp;a&nbsp;tourist rather than as&nbsp;teaching material.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma10.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma10a.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma10b.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma10c.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"the Charterhouse of Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka11\"><\/a>So&nbsp;let&nbsp;us return to&nbsp;the city to&nbsp;see something more cheerful. Parma&rsquo;s parks, for example, are beautiful, large and numerous.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma11.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma11a.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma11b.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma11c.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma11d.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka12\"><\/a>At&nbsp;the same time, they are marred by&nbsp;certain gratuitous bureaucratic obscenities. Yes, as&nbsp;a&nbsp;good barbarian&nbsp;I crossed this boundary as&nbsp;well, yet my&nbsp;perception of&nbsp;safety remained unchanged. Indeed, the publication of&nbsp;this account confirms that&nbsp;I was neither abducted by&nbsp;sirens, devoured by&nbsp;piranhas, electrocuted by&nbsp;exposed cables in&nbsp;the water, robbed by&nbsp;ducks, nor assaulted by&nbsp;ghosts.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma12.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka13\"><\/a>Another negative peculiarity of&nbsp;some Parmese parks is&nbsp;the excessive regularity with which the trees are planted. This resembles a&nbsp;plantation for future construction timber more than a&nbsp;park:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma13.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka14\"><\/a>It&nbsp;is&nbsp;in&nbsp;fact the bed of&nbsp;the Parma torrent that resembles a&nbsp;genuine park in&nbsp;preparation. Judging by&nbsp;the number of&nbsp;trees and bushes, however, one might deduce that the stream transformed into a&nbsp;trickle quite some time ago.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma14.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma14a.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"the torrent Parma in Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka15\"><\/a>On&nbsp;the subject of&nbsp;water: the only remaining historic municipal well is&nbsp;non-functional because it&nbsp;lacks the pumping lever. The material history of&nbsp;the city deserves slightly better protection.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma15.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma15a.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma15b.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka16\"><\/a>On&nbsp;the other hand, the streets of&nbsp;Parma contain a&nbsp;remarkable variety of&nbsp;attractive (or&nbsp;at&nbsp;least not dreadful) kiosks.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma16.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma16a.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma16b.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma16c.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"kiosks of Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka17\"><\/a>This automatic kiosk for collecting PET bottles (distinct from &laquo;ordinary&raquo; plastic!) almost made me&nbsp;feel at&nbsp;home. Unlike its Moscow counterparts, however, it&nbsp;pays not in&nbsp;cash but in&nbsp;credit redeemable in&nbsp;participating shops. It&nbsp;is&nbsp;nonetheless a&nbsp;valid system.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma17.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma17a.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma17b.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma17c.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma17d.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma17e.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"the collection of PET bottles in Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka18\"><\/a>You have already glimpsed a&nbsp;portion of&nbsp;the local bike-sharing scheme. The bicycles are, in&nbsp;fact, extremely simple.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma18.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the bike sharing in Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka19\"><\/a>The most aesthetically pleasing parking for private bicycles (though still not especially secure) is&nbsp;located in&nbsp;the centre.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma19.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"city buses in Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka20\"><\/a>I&nbsp;was somewhat surprised by&nbsp;the lack of&nbsp;aesthetic uniformity among the local public transport vehicles. I&nbsp;also seemed to&nbsp;observe that buses belonging to&nbsp;each line are painted in&nbsp;that line&rsquo;s designated colour (as&nbsp;with the Milan underground). Should my&nbsp;observation correspond to&nbsp;reality, we&nbsp;must acknowledge the convenience of&nbsp;the system (it&nbsp;is&nbsp;impossible to&nbsp;board the wrong bus) and express certain doubts regarding its economic efficiency.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma20.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma20a.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka21\"><\/a>At&nbsp;central stops, passengers are offered no&nbsp;protection from sun, wind or&nbsp;rain. The poles themselves do&nbsp;not strike me&nbsp;as&nbsp;particularly visible (though not unattractive).<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma21.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka22\"><\/a>Throughout the city&nbsp;I noticed a&nbsp;certain variety of&nbsp;original benches. A&nbsp;positive feature.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma22.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma22a.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma22b.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma22c.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka23\"><\/a>My&nbsp;favourites, however, are those at&nbsp;non-central bus stops: original and comfortable.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma23.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka24\"><\/a>A&nbsp;natural source of&nbsp;Wi-Fi! [eduroam users will understand.] Let&nbsp;us check the post.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma24.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka25\"><\/a>Another peculiarity of&nbsp;Parma&rsquo;s historic centre: the street name plaques are often gigantic (by&nbsp;Italian standards). A&nbsp;courtesy to&nbsp;those with weaker eyesight?<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma25.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma25a.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma25b.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka26\"><\/a>Student humour applied to&nbsp;traffic signs:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma26.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka27\"><\/a>The majority of&nbsp;large litter bins in&nbsp;Parma have their openings crudely narrowed (a&nbsp;measure against bulky waste), but they do&nbsp;at&nbsp;least include ashtrays.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma27.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma27a.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma27b.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka28\"><\/a>The small and medium bins have little that is&nbsp;original about them.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma28.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma28a.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma28b.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka29\"><\/a>Some pedestrian traffic lights include a&nbsp;countdown section, though it&nbsp;functions only for the red phase.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma29.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma29a.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka30\"><\/a>Easily accessible paid parking:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma30.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka31\"><\/a>On&nbsp;one road sign, the garden is&nbsp;depicted in&nbsp;its post-fire, mutilated version.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma31.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka32\"><\/a>At&nbsp;last&nbsp;I have seen one of&nbsp;these famous signs in&nbsp;person. I&nbsp;recognise the elegance of&nbsp;the idea, but&nbsp;I hope its implementation does not spread too widely: traffic signs must remain graphic messages that are quick and easy to&nbsp;read.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma32.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka33\"><\/a>In&nbsp;Parma too, an&nbsp;alternative has been found to&nbsp;the usual hanging umbrellas.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma33.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka34\"><\/a>And if&nbsp;we&nbsp;continue looking upwards, we&nbsp;discover that period supports now carry modern street lamps. It&nbsp;is&nbsp;not an&nbsp;especially harmonious combination.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma34.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka35\"><\/a>Smoking and financial losses may harm your health, so&nbsp;do&nbsp;not begin.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma35.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Parma\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka36\"><\/a>And now that we&nbsp;have seen everything, we&nbsp;may depart from the very beautiful Parma railway station.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/parma2018\/parma36.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the railway station in Parma\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The photographic account of a tourist visit to Parma on 28 July 2018.
