Occasionally, however, it&nbsp;is.<br \/>\nOn&nbsp;24 December 2016, disembarking in&nbsp;yet another randomly selected locality&nbsp;&mdash; Casalmaggiore, in&nbsp;this case&nbsp;&mdash; I&nbsp;immediately realised that luck had finally made an&nbsp;appearance. From the very first steps, I&nbsp;found myself in&nbsp;a&nbsp;genuinely beautiful town (albeit a&nbsp;small one: just over fifteen thousand inhabitants).<br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka1\"><\/a>The&nbsp;main peculiarity of&nbsp;Casalmaggiore&rsquo;s central square is&nbsp;the absence of&nbsp;churches. Instead, one finds the Town Hall, stylistically reminiscent of&nbsp;that in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/en\/travel\/piacenza2015\/#fotka5\">Piacenza<\/a>.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore01.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore01a.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Casalmaggiore\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka2\"><\/a>The&nbsp;Cathedral of&nbsp;Casalmaggiore, completed in&nbsp;1861, is&nbsp;built in&nbsp;the neoclassical style and contains several interesting peculiarities. First of&nbsp;all, its walls are neither plastered nor made of&nbsp;exposed raw brick.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore02.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the Cathedral of Casalmaggiore\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka3\"><\/a>Moreover, the profile of&nbsp;the columns and the windows is&nbsp;not entirely typical of&nbsp;an&nbsp;Italian church.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore03.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore03a.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"the Cathedral of Casalmaggiore\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka4\"><\/a>The only other church that seemed sufficiently interesting to&nbsp;merit your attention stands outside the town, in&nbsp;the middle of&nbsp;the fields&nbsp;&mdash; and was closed at&nbsp;the time of&nbsp;my&nbsp;visit.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore04.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Casalmaggiore\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka5\"><\/a>On&nbsp;the central square, however, I&nbsp;encountered a&nbsp;nativity scene remarkable in&nbsp;its simplicity.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore05.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"nativity scene in Casalmaggiore\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka6\"><\/a>From a&nbsp;distance, this building initially struck me&nbsp;as&nbsp;a&nbsp;mosque. Closer inspection revealed it&nbsp;to&nbsp;be&nbsp;an&nbsp;ordinary residential structure: the intercom bore exclusively Italian surnames, and the entrance displayed Christmas decorations.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore06.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore06a.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Casalmaggiore\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka7\"><\/a>The older generations will carry their religious tales heavenwards. The newer generations have developed myths of&nbsp;their own.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore07.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Casalmaggiore\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka8\"><\/a>The &laquo;Temple of&nbsp;Culture&raquo;&nbsp;&mdash; the late 18th-century municipal theatre&nbsp;&mdash; appears operational and in&nbsp;good condition. A&nbsp;relief.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore08.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the municipal theatre in Casalmaggiore\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka9\"><\/a>The civil architecture&nbsp;is, overall, attractive. In&nbsp;one case I&nbsp;even found a&nbsp;deconsecrated church converted to&nbsp;civic use&nbsp;&mdash; still a&nbsp;rare phenomenon in&nbsp;Italy.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore09.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore09a.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore09b.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore09c.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore09d.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"the old town of Casalmaggiore\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka10\"><\/a>Naturally, good architectural examples are easier to&nbsp;find in&nbsp;the centre. Yet even in&nbsp;the periphery of&nbsp;Casalmaggiore there are entire areas of&nbsp;considerable value. One such district seemed almost English in&nbsp;style.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore10.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore10a.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"suburbs of Casalmaggiore\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka11\"><\/a>There are, however, certain rather curious choices. This terrace, for instance, has no&nbsp;visible access other than a&nbsp;window belonging to&nbsp;the pink building&nbsp;&mdash; and yet appears to&nbsp;be&nbsp;regularly used.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore11.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Casalmaggiore\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka12\"><\/a>Abandoned (or&nbsp;nearly abandoned) buildings are, of&nbsp;course, present, many of&nbsp;which would merit recovery.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore12.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore12a.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Casalmaggiore\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka13\"><\/a>Casalmaggiore&rsquo;s military architecture consists of&nbsp;a&nbsp;single Torrione: presumably well preserved, though surrounded by&nbsp;buildings of&nbsp;various kinds, which makes detailed study somewhat impractical.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore13.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore13a.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"a mysterious tower in Casalmaggiore\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka14\"><\/a>Among the town&rsquo;s artistic monuments, particular attention should be&nbsp;paid to&nbsp;the fountain&nbsp;&mdash; built in&nbsp;April 2002&nbsp;&mdash; intended to&nbsp;evoke &laquo;the river and the Po&nbsp;Valley landscape.&raquo; In&nbsp;this context, the sign stating &laquo;non-potable water&raquo; acquires an&nbsp;additional symbolic resonance.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore14.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore14a.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore14b.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Casalmaggiore\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka15\"><\/a>Local commercial activities are not negligible. Some display monumental signage of&nbsp;impressive proportions.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore15.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Casalmaggiore\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka16\"><\/a>Others&nbsp;&mdash; such as&nbsp;this former weigh station&nbsp;&mdash; have been converted without significant alteration to&nbsp;their historical appearance.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore16.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore16a.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Casalmaggiore\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka17\"><\/a>At&nbsp;first glance, this area resembled a&nbsp;driving school training ground. It&nbsp;is, in&nbsp;fact, a&nbsp;karting track.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore17.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"una pista per i kart a Casalmaggiore\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka18\"><\/a>In&nbsp;certain stretches along the riverbank&nbsp;&mdash; though not elsewhere in&nbsp;town&nbsp;&mdash; signs indicate recreational points.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore18.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Casalmaggiore\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka19\"><\/a>I&nbsp;had hoped that this map might prove somewhat more useful from an&nbsp;ethnographic or&nbsp;tourist perspective. It&nbsp;is&nbsp;merely a&nbsp;list of&nbsp;restaurants in&nbsp;the province of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/en\/travel\/cremona2011\/\">Cremona<\/a> (within which Casalmaggiore is&nbsp;located).<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore19.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Casalmaggiore\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka20\"><\/a>The large boat station on&nbsp;the&nbsp;Po appears operational despite its overall aesthetic condition.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore20.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore20a.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"a boat station on the Po River in Casalmaggiore\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka21\"><\/a>Boats, however, are scarce, despite the almost spring-like weather. Presumably their owners are at&nbsp;home, detained by&nbsp;the Great Christmas Monster.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore21.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore21a.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore21b.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Casalmaggiore\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka22\"><\/a>On&nbsp;the steps leading down to&nbsp;the river, a&nbsp;metre scale marks the historical maximum flood levels of&nbsp;the Po.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore22.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore22a.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore22b.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Casalmaggiore\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka23\"><\/a>This peculiar metal installation&nbsp;&mdash; resembling a&nbsp;ship secured by&nbsp;an&nbsp;advanced anti-theft system&nbsp;&mdash; serves a&nbsp;function unknown to&nbsp;me. Given that the entrance to&nbsp;the municipal waterworks lies on&nbsp;the other side of&nbsp;the embankment protecting the town, I&nbsp;assume it&nbsp;forms part of&nbsp;the&nbsp;water intake system.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore23.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore23a.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Casalmaggiore\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka24\"><\/a>The most widespread bench model in&nbsp;Casalmaggiore is&nbsp;unremarkable&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore24.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the typical bench of Casalmaggiore\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka25\"><\/a>&#8230; except for the occasionally unusual locations in&nbsp;which it&nbsp;is&nbsp;installed.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore25.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Casalmaggiore\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka26\"><\/a>Other bench models exist, though they are less common and often considerably stranger.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore26.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore26a.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Casalmaggiore\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka27\"><\/a>This late December was unusually warm (the benches could therefore be&nbsp;tested comfortably), yet the exact temperature remained unknown to&nbsp;me. The beautiful antique thermometer on&nbsp;the fa&ccedil;ade of&nbsp;the Town Hall has a&nbsp;glass casing so&nbsp;dirty that it&nbsp;is&nbsp;no&nbsp;longer transparent.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore27.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore27a.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Casalmaggiore\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka28\"><\/a>The bicycle parking facility next to&nbsp;the railway station possesses an&nbsp;original appearance and limited functionality (the frame can be&nbsp;secured to&nbsp;only one of&nbsp;the four posts).<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore28.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Casalmaggiore\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka29\"><\/a>Casalmaggiore&rsquo;s litter bins have a&nbsp;curious design and are frequently equipped with ashtrays: respect.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore29.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore29a.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Casalmaggiore\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka30\"><\/a>This is&nbsp;the first time I&nbsp;have encountered such an&nbsp;elaborate artificial nest.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore30.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Casalmaggiore\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka31\"><\/a>The railway station of&nbsp;Casalmaggiore has the typical structure of&nbsp;small Lombard stations. I&nbsp;am beginning to&nbsp;suspect that the network of&nbsp;19th-century freight depots&nbsp;&mdash; now largely unused&nbsp;&mdash; could be&nbsp;economically repurposed. For instance, transformed into a&nbsp;chain of&nbsp;micro-hostels (their location is&nbsp;invariably advantageous).<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore31.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore31a.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"the railway station in Casalmaggiore\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka32\"><\/a>The station&rsquo;s most notable virtue is&nbsp;the evident affection its administrators hold for Italy&rsquo;s material history. Indeed, I&nbsp;found two locomotive water cranes preserved in&nbsp;significantly better condition than the one I&nbsp;observed in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/en\/travel\/breno2014\/#fotka28\">Breno<\/a>. First, note that the original lamps and wells remain intact.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore32.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore32a.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"the water hose for locomotives at the railway station in Casalmaggiore\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka33\"><\/a>Moreover, one can clearly see the chain used to&nbsp;rotate the arm, the rigid handle employed to&nbsp;secure the pivoting pipe in&nbsp;one of&nbsp;four possible positions (the handle had to&nbsp;be&nbsp;slotted into two aligned recesses), and the valve used to&nbsp;open and close the water. Installation year: 1907 (Italian State Railways were formally established in&nbsp;1905 following the nationalisation of&nbsp;numerous private lines).<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore33.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore33a.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore33b.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore33c.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/casalmaggiore2016\/casalmaggiore33d.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"the water hose for locomotives at the railway station in Casalmaggiore\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka34\"><\/a>Well. That is&nbsp;all for today. Casalmaggiore is&nbsp;an&nbsp;open town.
