In&nbsp;order to&nbsp;resolve this uncertainty, I&nbsp;decided to&nbsp;visit it&nbsp;in&nbsp;person.<br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka1\"><\/a>The centre proves surprisingly attractive and architecturally varied&nbsp;&mdash; though, inevitably, compact.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina01.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina01a.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina01b.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"the old town of Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka2\"><\/a>The most interesting and beautiful church in&nbsp;Soresina is&nbsp;the one with the least inviting fa&ccedil;ade: the sixteenth-century Church of&nbsp;San Rocco.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina02.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the church of San Rocco in Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka3\"><\/a>It&nbsp;is&nbsp;noteworthy not only for its original structure and proportions (best appreciated directly)&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina03.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the interior of the church of San Rocco in Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka4\"><\/a>&#8230; but also for a&nbsp;maintenance solution&nbsp;I have not observed elsewhere: the organ pipes are fitted with closable shutters, operated by&nbsp;mechanism, presumably to&nbsp;protect them from unspecified threats. Dust, I&nbsp;imagine, remains unconvinced.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina04.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the interior of the church of San Rocco in Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka5\"><\/a>In&nbsp;another church&nbsp;&mdash; which I&nbsp;shall refrain from promoting in&nbsp;the interest of&nbsp;your aesthetic well-being&nbsp;&mdash; mosaics are displayed that appear, with some probability, to&nbsp;have been executed by&nbsp;my&nbsp;most promising pupil. The possibility of&nbsp;surpassing one&rsquo;s teacher should never be&nbsp;dismissed.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina05.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina05a.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"audio1\"><\/a>At&nbsp;midday the bells of&nbsp;the cathedral begin an&nbsp;acoustic performance of&nbsp;considerable intensity. I&nbsp;recorded them for you.<br \/>\n<audio controls preload=\"auto\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/campanesoresina.mp3\" type=\"audio\/mp3\"><\/audio><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka6\"><\/a>Local sculptors do&nbsp;not appear to&nbsp;have devoted excessive attention to&nbsp;anatomy. Unless, of&nbsp;course, centaurs are known to&nbsp;possess bifurcated spinal structures. The monument in&nbsp;question, installed in&nbsp;1958, is&nbsp;dedicated to&nbsp;those who fell for freedom.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina06.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the monument to those who died for freedom in Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka7\"><\/a>The monument entitled &laquo;O&nbsp;Roma o&nbsp;Morte&raquo; is&nbsp;dedicated to&nbsp;Garibaldi. The capitalised &laquo;M&raquo; lends the inscription a&nbsp;tone of&nbsp;devotional solemnity.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina07.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the monument to Garibaldi in Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka8\"><\/a>A&nbsp;monument of&nbsp;comparable scale, though on&nbsp;a&nbsp;more modest pedestal and positioned near the railway station rather than in&nbsp;the centre, honours Francesco Genala, one of&nbsp;Italy&rsquo;s early Ministers of&nbsp;Education. His principal qualification for commemoration appears to&nbsp;have been birth in&nbsp;Soresina.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina08.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the monument to Garibaldi in Francesco Genala in Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka9\"><\/a>It&nbsp;would, however, be&nbsp;unjust to&nbsp;assume that only past artisans were capable of&nbsp;producing beauty. This, for example, is&nbsp;the most elegant temporary construction-site door&nbsp;I have yet encountered (attached, in&nbsp;this case, to&nbsp;a&nbsp;historic building under restoration).<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina09.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka10\"><\/a>Meanwhile, local estate agents seem to&nbsp;have adopted certain strategies from automobile dealers&nbsp;&mdash; unless this is&nbsp;a&nbsp;broader national innovation. It&nbsp;is&nbsp;the first such offer&nbsp;I have seen.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina10.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka11\"><\/a>The nursery school, which serves as&nbsp;a&nbsp;second home for many local children, resembles a&nbsp;correctional facility.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina11.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the kindergarten of Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka12\"><\/a>The residents of&nbsp;this apartment building may experience a&nbsp;comparable sentiment.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina12.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka13\"><\/a>I&nbsp;find this method of&nbsp;street-name inscription particularly appealing: sufficiently long marble slabs, proportionate and restrained.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina13.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina13a.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka14\"><\/a>In&nbsp;the centre&nbsp;I encountered a&nbsp;precious historical artefact: a&nbsp;three-dimensional street sign in&nbsp;frosted glass, illuminated from within. Should it&nbsp;survive until my&nbsp;next visit, it&nbsp;deserves protective custody. (Comparable examples exist along Corso Vittorio Emanuele II&nbsp;in&nbsp;Milan, though flatter and less persuasive.)<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina14.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka15\"><\/a>These peripheral signs are also noteworthy&nbsp;&mdash; though not conventionally attractive.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina15.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka16\"><\/a>The frame of&nbsp;this particular example evokes something familiar, yet I&nbsp;am unable to&nbsp;identify the reference.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina16.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka17\"><\/a>A&nbsp;significant number of&nbsp;central streets lack pavements. On&nbsp;either side. Even painted ones. Consequently, pedestrian safety depends largely on&nbsp;the moral refinement of&nbsp;drivers and their willingness to&nbsp;leave a&nbsp;navigable margin between vehicle and wall.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina17.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka18\"><\/a>In&nbsp;the window of&nbsp;a&nbsp;small grocery shop&nbsp;I observed an&nbsp;intriguing juxtaposition of&nbsp;mass-destruction devices and ritual objects.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina18.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina18a.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka19\"><\/a>In&nbsp;a&nbsp;jeweller&rsquo;s display, meanwhile, one finds an&nbsp;allegorical representation of&nbsp;what may occur to&nbsp;wooden objects after receiving jewellery as&nbsp;a&nbsp;gift. Seasonal shopping in&nbsp;Soresina may therefore acquire unexpected intellectual depth.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina19.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"a shop window that mocks women in Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka20\"><\/a>The extensive Monday market, occupying the principal streets of&nbsp;the centre, lacks display windows&nbsp;&mdash; mercifully. One may nevertheless question the contemporary logic of&nbsp;street markets in&nbsp;the twenty-first century, given the existence of&nbsp;daily supermarkets with extended hours, lower prices, and more standardised quality control.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina20.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina20a.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina20b.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"the town market in Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka21\"><\/a>The former, smaller market structure has been reinforced in&nbsp;an&nbsp;aesthetically acceptable manner&nbsp;&mdash; an&nbsp;occurrence sufficiently rare to&nbsp;merit documentation.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina21.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the town market in Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka22\"><\/a>Whether due to&nbsp;the holiday weekend or&nbsp;not, I&nbsp;observed the market transforming into a&nbsp;social arena. Conversation appeared to&nbsp;dominate over commerce, which is&nbsp;perhaps the defining luxury of&nbsp;smaller urban environments.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina22.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka23\"><\/a>The local Teatro Sociale is&nbsp;compressed between buildings along a&nbsp;secondary street; judging from its programme, however, it&nbsp;remains commendably active.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina23.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the theater of Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka24\"><\/a>Green spaces are limited but well maintained.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina24.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka25\"><\/a>Their principal users are naturally children. For them, an&nbsp;engaging attraction has been installed&nbsp;&mdash; one that would have captivated me&nbsp;entirely at&nbsp;the age of&nbsp;three or&nbsp;four, despite its complete lack of&nbsp;technological sophistication.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina25.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina25a.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina25b.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka26\"><\/a>In&nbsp;much of&nbsp;the outskirts, outdoor walks are accompanied by&nbsp;a&nbsp;persistent and suspicious odour. Upon identifying its source, I&nbsp;also discovered why the town&rsquo;s name had seemed familiar.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina26.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina26a.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka27\"><\/a>Other sectors of&nbsp;the local economy have not fared equally well.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina27.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka28\"><\/a>The same may be&nbsp;said of&nbsp;public transport: what remains of&nbsp;the former tramway has been reassigned to&nbsp;alternative purposes.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina28.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka29\"><\/a>The railway station (three tracks) fortunately remains operational&nbsp;&mdash; possibly assisted by&nbsp;the fact that the building and surrounding areas have been granted on&nbsp;loan to&nbsp;the municipality.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina29.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the railway station in Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka30\"><\/a>Inside the station stands a&nbsp;remarkably large and curiously distinctive newsagent&rsquo;s kiosk&nbsp;&mdash; almost beautiful. Its windows are filled with periodicals of&nbsp;uneven intellectual ambition. Alongside printed pornography (still industriously surviving), one finds sport and the private lives of&nbsp;public figures. There&nbsp;is, evidently, a&nbsp;market for such material.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina30.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka31\"><\/a>The supposed station bar, furnished with antique pieces, proved to&nbsp;be&nbsp;a&nbsp;private establishment (interpretation withheld).<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina31.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka32\"><\/a>The nearby bus stop is&nbsp;agreeable in&nbsp;appearance, though of&nbsp;debatable utility in&nbsp;heavy rain.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina32.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka33\"><\/a>The bicycle shelter adopts the same architectural vocabulary. It&nbsp;is&nbsp;generous in&nbsp;exposure to&nbsp;sun and precipitation, and less persuasive as&nbsp;a&nbsp;deterrent to&nbsp;theft.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina33.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka34\"><\/a>The station ashtray is&nbsp;excellent.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina34.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka35\"><\/a>The litter bins are less so&nbsp;&mdash; though at&nbsp;least consistent throughout the town and of&nbsp;original design.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina35.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka36\"><\/a>I&nbsp;observed only a&nbsp;single dispenser for dog-waste bags.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina36.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Soresina\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka37\"><\/a>And with that, I&nbsp;relinquish any further ambition of&nbsp;discovering additional wonders in&nbsp;Soresina. Those endowed with greater stamina may reserve a&nbsp;room in&nbsp;this exuberantly kitsch hotel and continue the investigation.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/soresina2016\/soresina37.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Soresina\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The photographic account of a tourist visit to Soresina on 31 October 2016.
