{"id":702,"date":"2026-02-16T14:29:23","date_gmt":"2026-02-16T14:29:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/en\/?page_id=702"},"modified":"2026-02-16T14:29:24","modified_gmt":"2026-02-16T14:29:24","slug":"lovere2015","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/en\/travel\/lovere2015\/","title":{"rendered":"Lovere, 25 July 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My&nbsp;escape from the exceptional Milanese heat brought&nbsp;me, on&nbsp;25&nbsp;July, to&nbsp;Lovere on&nbsp;Lake Iseo (in&nbsp;the province of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/en\/travel\/bergamo2012\/\">Bergamo<\/a>). I&nbsp;expected to&nbsp;find a&nbsp;perfectly polished, classic lakeside resort town&nbsp;&mdash; and instead&nbsp;no: it&nbsp;is&nbsp;genuinely beautiful even for those who travel in&nbsp;order to&nbsp;study towns rather than beaches.<br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka1\"><\/a>Lovere has some beautiful squares along the lakeside&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere01.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere01a.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"the old town of Lovere\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka2\"><\/a>&#8230; and small but equally attractive squares in&nbsp;areas further away from the water.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere02.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the old town of Lovere\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka3\"><\/a>The medieval streets are also pleasant to&nbsp;wander through. Their numerous ascents and descents are not always easy to&nbsp;tackle under the intense summer sun, but, fortunately, shaded areas are frequent.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere03.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere03a.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"the old town of Lovere\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka4\"><\/a>The hillside position of&nbsp;the town centre has nevertheless compelled local architects to&nbsp;adopt rather curious solutions. The fa&ccedil;ade of&nbsp;Lovere Cathedral, for instance, is&nbsp;half the height of&nbsp;its rear side. The entrance portico is&nbsp;built above a&nbsp;staircase with a&nbsp;gradient of&nbsp;approximately 30&nbsp;degrees.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere04.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the Cathedral of Lovere\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka5\"><\/a>Yet interesting choices have also been made for more modern buildings.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere05.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Lovere\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka6\"><\/a>Yes, it&nbsp;is&nbsp;quite true: Lovere is&nbsp;a&nbsp;paradise for creative architects. The town hospital, for example, resembles a&nbsp;prison.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere06.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the hospital of Lovere\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka7\"><\/a>In&nbsp;various parts of&nbsp;the municipality&nbsp;&mdash; even in&nbsp;the centre&nbsp;&mdash; abandoned private villas are frequently visible. They are not as&nbsp;numerous as&nbsp;in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/en\/travel\/treviglio2014\/#fotka8\">Treviglio<\/a>, but neither are they few. I&nbsp;hope that Lovere&rsquo;s tourist specificity will favour their timely restoration: for now, they are not in&nbsp;critical condition.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere07.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere07a.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Lovere\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka8\"><\/a>The title &laquo;One of&nbsp;the Most Beautiful Villages in&nbsp;Italy&raquo; is&nbsp;to&nbsp;be&nbsp;regarded as&nbsp;deserved. But it&nbsp;must immediately be&nbsp;specified that it&nbsp;was deserved by&nbsp;the ancestors of&nbsp;the current inhabitants. The latter, by&nbsp;contrast, are not even capable of&nbsp;installing and fixing a&nbsp;sign in&nbsp;an&nbsp;aesthetically pleasing manner.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere08.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Lovere\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka9\"><\/a>Every grille, even when installed on&nbsp;a&nbsp;religious building, inevitably calls to&nbsp;mind the prison theme.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere09.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Lovere\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka10\"><\/a>Fortunately, Lovere is&nbsp;full of&nbsp;small historical details to&nbsp;discover&#8230; It&nbsp;seems scarcely credible that, in&nbsp;this specific case, the year of&nbsp;construction is&nbsp;1793, while the &laquo;fine from 1,000 to&nbsp;5,000&nbsp;lire&raquo; will undoubtedly encourage our grandchildren to&nbsp;study economic history.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere10.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere10a.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"potable water in Lovere\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka11\"><\/a>The oldest Italian post box I&nbsp;have ever seen is&nbsp;present in&nbsp;Lovere in&nbsp;numerous examples. To&nbsp;clarify: this is&nbsp;not a&nbsp;private mailbox (as&nbsp;its size and wall-mounted position might suggest) but a&nbsp;public one, intended for posting letters.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere11.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Lovere\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka12\"><\/a>The American-style mailbox has been adapted to&nbsp;Italian reality and usage.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere12.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Lovere\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka13\"><\/a>The entrance to&nbsp;the Town Hall resembles a&nbsp;gateway to&nbsp;another world. The paradise of&nbsp;bureaucrats, perhaps? Who knows&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere13.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the Town Hall of Lovere\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka14\"><\/a>Lovere&rsquo;s lakeside promenade is&nbsp;divided into several sections, each bearing the name of&nbsp;some historical figure.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere14.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the lakefront promenade in Lovere\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka15\"><\/a>The division into sections consists in&nbsp;the diversification of&nbsp;the street furniture. The most attractive among them is&nbsp;undoubtedly this one:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere15.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere15a.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere15b.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere15c.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"the lakefront promenade in Lovere\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka16\"><\/a>Another section of&nbsp;the promenade, with a&nbsp;rather distinctive appearance, is&nbsp;characterised by&nbsp;a&nbsp;high degree of&nbsp;cementification and litter bins that at&nbsp;first glance resemble underground refuse containers.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere16.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere16a.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere16b.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"il lungolago di Lovere\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka17\"><\/a>On&nbsp;other stretches of&nbsp;the lakeside we&nbsp;find simple benches of&nbsp;various models.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere17.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere17a.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"the lakefront promenade in Lovere\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka18\"><\/a>Only in&nbsp;one spot did I&nbsp;see particular benches similar to&nbsp;those observed in&nbsp;a&nbsp;park in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/en\/travel\/crema2011\/#fotka23\">Crema<\/a>.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere18.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Lovere\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka19\"><\/a>The bicycle racks have nothing noteworthy about them except their limited security.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere19.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Lovere\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka20\"><\/a>However, it&nbsp;would be&nbsp;incorrect to&nbsp;speak only of&nbsp;the mainland and neglect the fact that Lovere is&nbsp;located almost &laquo;at&nbsp;the top&raquo; of&nbsp;Lake Iseo.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere20.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the view of the lake in Lovere\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka21\"><\/a>The cranes in&nbsp;the local harbour are of&nbsp;astonishing beauty. One even resembles a&nbsp;miniature control tower.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere21.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Lovere\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka22\"><\/a>Owners of&nbsp;slightly more modest boats economise by&nbsp;using concrete counterweights for secure mooring.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere22.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Lovere\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka23\"><\/a>Those without their own boat may use public transport to&nbsp;reach neighbouring towns.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere23.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere23a.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"the ferries in Lovere\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka24\"><\/a>I&nbsp;cannot comment much on&nbsp;the quality of&nbsp;the service, but at&nbsp;least the stops are comfortable and covered.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere24.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Lovere\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka25\"><\/a>Those who prefer to&nbsp;travel by&nbsp;land may take the bus to&nbsp;or&nbsp;from Bergamo (relatively frequent).<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere25.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"an intercity bus stop in Lovere\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka26\"><\/a>Of&nbsp;those who move on&nbsp;their own legs via water, I&nbsp;saw only swans&#8230; The grey ones&nbsp;I had never encountered before.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere26.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Lovere\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka27\"><\/a>There are many creatures who move on&nbsp;their own legs on&nbsp;land. Yet, curiously, almost all pavements in&nbsp;Lovere are constructed in&nbsp;this manner:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere27.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Lovere\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka28\"><\/a>And the pedestrian crossings are painted on&nbsp;a&nbsp;blue background rather than a&nbsp;red one.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere28.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Lovere\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka29\"><\/a>Some litter bins have a&nbsp;truly peculiar appearance.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere29.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere29a.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Lovere\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka30\"><\/a>Next to&nbsp;a&nbsp;very common Italian bin model (see, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/en\/travel\/mantova2009\/#fotka6\">Mantua<\/a> and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/en\/travel\/manerbio2014\/#fotka17\">Manerbio<\/a>) I&nbsp;noticed an&nbsp;extremely rare object: a&nbsp;large, standalone ashtray. The only other town where&nbsp;I have witnessed a&nbsp;similar miracle was Treviglio.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere30.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Lovere\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka31\"><\/a>Some of&nbsp;the extremely common bins, however, are equipped with bags for collecting dog waste: only in&nbsp;Lovere have&nbsp;I observed this highly useful modification.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere31.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Lovere\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka32\"><\/a>Yet the study of&nbsp;litter bins did not distract me&nbsp;from the search for other local peculiarities. The elevated concrete basin painted grey serves to&nbsp;irrigate public flowerpots using rainwater collected from the roofs along the street:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere32.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere32a.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere32b.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Lovere\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka33\"><\/a>Well, the engineers of&nbsp;Lovere certainly know a&nbsp;thing or&nbsp;two!<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/lovere2015\/lovere33.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Lovere\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The photographic account of a tourist visit to Lovere on 25 July 2015.
