{"id":696,"date":"2026-02-16T14:24:18","date_gmt":"2026-02-16T14:24:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/en\/?page_id=696"},"modified":"2026-02-16T14:24:18","modified_gmt":"2026-02-16T14:24:18","slug":"gambolo2015","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/en\/travel\/gambolo2015\/","title":{"rendered":"Gambol&ograve;, 1 June 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name=\"fotka1\"><\/a>I&nbsp;entered Gambol&ograve; (in&nbsp;the province of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/en\/travel\/pavia2012.04\/\">Pavia<\/a>) from this side, characterised by&nbsp;two interesting details: the incorrect accent on&nbsp;the sign (in&nbsp;this form it&nbsp;is&nbsp;acceptable only in&nbsp;digital texts and only with certain character encodings) and the two bell towers acting as&nbsp;pillars of&nbsp;Hercules.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo01.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Gambol&ograve;\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka2\"><\/a>A&nbsp;few minutes later I&nbsp;discovered that only the bell tower you see on&nbsp;the right belongs to&nbsp;a&nbsp;church worthy of&nbsp;attention.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo02.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the cgurch of Madonna del Terdoppio in Gambol&ograve;\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka3\"><\/a>In&nbsp;the following hours&nbsp;I discovered that Gambol&ograve; is&nbsp;full of&nbsp;bell towers and, logically, of&nbsp;churches. I&nbsp;counted six&#8230; Just imagine: a&nbsp;municipality which, together with its five hamlets (each with its own church), hosts barely 10,000&nbsp;inhabitants, has six churches in&nbsp;the main settlement alone. I&nbsp;therefore believe&nbsp;I was mistaken in&nbsp;previously <a href=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/en\/travel\/robbio2014\/\">awarding Robbio<\/a> first place in&nbsp;the category &laquo;number of&nbsp;churches per capita&raquo;.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo03.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo03a.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo03b.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"the church of Saints Gaudentius and Eusebius in Gambol&ograve;\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka4\"><\/a>While I&nbsp;was standing in&nbsp;front of&nbsp;the door of&nbsp;this church tying my&nbsp;shoelace, a&nbsp;lady came out, looked at&nbsp;me&nbsp;with great curiosity and said:<br \/>\n&laquo;I&nbsp;think&nbsp;I know who you are.&raquo;<br \/>\n&laquo;Oh&nbsp;really?&raquo; I&nbsp;replied, desperately trying to&nbsp;identify the moment in&nbsp;my&nbsp;biography when&nbsp;I became famous.<br \/>\n&laquo;You are here for the restoration.&raquo;<br \/>\n&laquo;Unfortunately I&nbsp;am not competent in&nbsp;that field&#8230;&raquo;<br \/>\n&laquo;Oh, sorry.&raquo;<br \/>\nAnd off she went, chasing a&nbsp;man who was pushing away a&nbsp;large plant in&nbsp;a&nbsp;wheelbarrow.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo04.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Gambol&ograve;\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka5\"><\/a>The result of&nbsp;restorations carried out by&nbsp;me&nbsp;would probably have looked like this (with the exception of&nbsp;the flag on&nbsp;the left).<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo05.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the center of Gambol&ograve;\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka6\"><\/a>In&nbsp;reality, Gambol&ograve; has a&nbsp;great many buildings in&nbsp;need of&nbsp;recovery. Some are in&nbsp;a&nbsp;clearly abandoned state; others (a&nbsp;few) are being restored and put up&nbsp;for sale.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo06.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Gambol&ograve;\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka7\"><\/a>Yet some peripheral areas are pleasant even as&nbsp;they are.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo07.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Gambol&ograve;\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka8\"><\/a>The old watermill appears to&nbsp;be&nbsp;the most solid secular building in&nbsp;the town: I&nbsp;noticed no&nbsp;structural damage, only aesthetic deterioration.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo08.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo08a.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo08b.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"an ancient mill in Gambol&ograve;\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka9\"><\/a>Even the animals appreciate the quality of&nbsp;this building. The canal that once powered the wheel is&nbsp;now full of&nbsp;turtles. They proved to&nbsp;be&nbsp;rather curious and courageous creatures: they posed quite calmly.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo09.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo09a.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Gambol&ograve;\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka10\"><\/a>In&nbsp;very few parts of&nbsp;Gambol&ograve; do&nbsp;well-maintained buildings prevail. I&nbsp;mainly mean the central square and a&nbsp;few adjacent streets. (N.B. The presence of&nbsp;commercial premises on&nbsp;the ground floor of&nbsp;the Town Hall is&nbsp;in&nbsp;fact a&nbsp;rather common phenomenon in&nbsp;small Italian municipalities.)<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo10.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo10a.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"the center of Gambol&ograve;\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka11\"><\/a>The local castle, founded in&nbsp;the 10th century and rebuilt between the 16th and 17th centuries, appears interesting when viewed from the outside&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo11.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo11a.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo11b.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo11c.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"the castle Gambol&ograve;\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka12\"><\/a>&#8230;although some of&nbsp;its details resemble old industrial buildings&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo12.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the center of Gambol&ograve;\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka13\"><\/a>Inside the castle, however, there is&nbsp;nothing particularly interesting: a&nbsp;restaurant, a&nbsp;large car park, a&nbsp;small playground, an&nbsp;association for the elderly, the local Red Cross&#8230; There is&nbsp;also an&nbsp;archaeological museum, but in&nbsp;June it&nbsp;is&nbsp;open only on&nbsp;Sunday afternoons (from mid-October to&nbsp;mid-May also on&nbsp;Tuesday and Thursday mornings).<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo13.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo13a.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo13b.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"the castle of Gambol&ograve;\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka14\"><\/a>Even the cemetery seems a&nbsp;more cheerful and interesting place. I&nbsp;am serious: Gambol&ograve;&rsquo;s cemetery is&nbsp;one of&nbsp;the most beautiful in&nbsp;Italy (though Milan&rsquo;s Monumentale remains unbeatable).<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo14.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the cemetery of Gambol&ograve;\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka15\"><\/a>Amid the ancient ruins there suddenly emerges a&nbsp;rare example of&nbsp;Italian Constructivism. I&nbsp;hope it&nbsp;does not fall into ruin as&nbsp;well.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo15.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Gambol&ograve;\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka16\"><\/a>Now let&nbsp;us turn to&nbsp;some smaller details. The sundial&nbsp;&mdash; located opposite the Town Hall&nbsp;&mdash; seems somewhat difficult to&nbsp;interpret&#8230; Do&nbsp;you not think something is&nbsp;missing?<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo16.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Gambol&ograve;\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka17\"><\/a>Whoever steals such a&nbsp;plaque for me&nbsp;will make me&nbsp;very happy.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo17.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Gambol&ograve;\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka18\"><\/a>Some street-name signs are, at&nbsp;first glance, incomprehensible. I&nbsp;later realised that the house numbers merge visually with the street names. If&nbsp;you know the &laquo;designer&raquo; responsible for these inscriptions, feel free to&nbsp;cut off his arms: I&nbsp;authorise you.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo18.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo18a.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Gambol&ograve;\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka19\"><\/a>I&nbsp;have never seen a&nbsp;drinking fountain more deserving of&nbsp;being called monumental than this one.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo19.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Gambol&ograve;\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka20\"><\/a>But the most interesting feature of&nbsp;Gambol&ograve;&rsquo;s urban design is&nbsp;the great variety (and, in&nbsp;many cases, beauty) of&nbsp;its large public planters.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo20.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo20a.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo20b.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo20c.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Gambol&ograve;\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka21\"><\/a>The only litter bin worthy of&nbsp;attention was spotted at&nbsp;the entrance to&nbsp;the aforementioned castle.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo21.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Gambol&ograve;\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka22\"><\/a>Inside the same castle there are benches with a&nbsp;rather complex structure. They are comfortable, though: I&nbsp;tested them personally.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo22.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Gambol&ograve;\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka23\"><\/a>At&nbsp;the entrance to&nbsp;the town there are customised letterboxes: hung on&nbsp;a&nbsp;roadside pole, with the respective surnames displayed in&nbsp;small windows. I&nbsp;have never seen such a&nbsp;thing elsewhere in&nbsp;Italy.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo23.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Gambol&ograve;\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka24\"><\/a>In&nbsp;the outskirts, in&nbsp;front of&nbsp;a&nbsp;villa, I&nbsp;also spotted an&nbsp;American-style mailbox. It&nbsp;is&nbsp;strange that there are not more of&nbsp;them in&nbsp;Europe.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo24.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Gambol&ograve;\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka25\"><\/a>I&nbsp;had to&nbsp;travel all the way to&nbsp;Gambol&ograve; to&nbsp;discover the etymology of&nbsp;the expression &laquo;a&nbsp;hammer blow to&nbsp;the balls&raquo;.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo25.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Gambol&ograve;\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka26\"><\/a>The bus stops are large but unlit, without covered benches and without protective side panels. In&nbsp;short, they are dreadful.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo26.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Gambol&ograve;\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka27\"><\/a>The inhabitants of&nbsp;Gambol&ograve; prepare to&nbsp;celebrate 2&nbsp;June by&nbsp;hanging paper chains above their windows. Yes, I&nbsp;saw a&nbsp;great many &laquo;chained&raquo; windows but failed to&nbsp;decipher the symbolic meaning of&nbsp;this type of&nbsp;decoration.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo27.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Gambol&ograve;\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka28\"><\/a>I&nbsp;therefore realised it&nbsp;was time to&nbsp;leave this strange place. A&nbsp;pleasant walk back towards the railway station awaited me&nbsp;&mdash; located in&nbsp;one of&nbsp;Gambol&ograve;&rsquo;s hamlets. &laquo;It&nbsp;is&nbsp;an&nbsp;agricultural town,&raquo; said the owner of&nbsp;a&nbsp;tobacconist&rsquo;s shop lacking the mandatory &laquo;T&raquo; sign.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo28.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo28a.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo28b.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Gambol&ograve;\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka29\"><\/a>The&nbsp;5.6 kilometres to&nbsp;be&nbsp;covered on&nbsp;foot across the fields make for an&nbsp;excellent workout. According to&nbsp;Google it&nbsp;takes 68&nbsp;minutes&nbsp;&mdash; I, however, needed about&nbsp;45 (walking calmly and stopping to&nbsp;take photographs).<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo29.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/gambolo2015\/gambolo29a.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Gambol&ograve;\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The photographic account of a tourist visit to Gambol\u00f2 on 1 June 2015.
