I&nbsp;can&rsquo;t say&nbsp;I regret visiting it&nbsp;&mdash; I&rsquo;ve seen worse in&nbsp;my&nbsp;life.<br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka1\"><\/a>The centre of&nbsp;Chiari is&nbsp;small but interesting.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/chiari2013\/chiari01.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the old town of Chiari\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka2\"><\/a>In&nbsp;some areas it&nbsp;feels a&nbsp;bit run-down.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/chiari2013\/chiari02.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the old town of Chiari\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka3\"><\/a>In&nbsp;other areas, on&nbsp;the contrary, it&nbsp;has been renovated to&nbsp;the point of&nbsp;looking almost too perfect.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/chiari2013\/chiari03.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the old town of Chiari\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka4\"><\/a>But there is&nbsp;still plenty of&nbsp;work for archaeologists.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/chiari2013\/chiari04.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"an ancient sign in Chiari\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka5\"><\/a>The most common street lamps in&nbsp;the historic centre are not ugly, but they are all incredibly dirty.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/chiari2013\/chiari05.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"a typical street lamp of Chiari\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka6\"><\/a>According to&nbsp;tradition, each fa&ccedil;ade of&nbsp;the Civic Tower should have a&nbsp;different background colour for the clock face (yellow, blue, green or&nbsp;red), but as&nbsp;far as&nbsp;I can tell it&nbsp;is&nbsp;always white (or&nbsp;am&nbsp;I&nbsp;mistaken?).<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/chiari2013\/chiari06.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the Civic Tower in Chiari\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka7\"><\/a>A&nbsp;tower 30&nbsp;metres high is&nbsp;all that remains of&nbsp;the Visconti Fortress.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/chiari2013\/chiari07.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the tower of the Visconti Fortress in Chiari\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka8\"><\/a>Anyone who does not wish to&nbsp;limit themselves to&nbsp;the traditional tour of&nbsp;the city&rsquo;s main churches could visit Villa Mazzotti: both the building and the surrounding park are designed in&nbsp;one of&nbsp;my&nbsp;favourite styles.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/chiari2013\/chiari08.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Villa Mazzotti in Chiari\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka9\"><\/a>From the park, however, I&nbsp;will show you only one detail: the super chicken coop.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/chiari2013\/chiari09.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the chicken coop at Villa Mazzotti in Chiari\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka10\"><\/a>But let&nbsp;us return to&nbsp;the city to&nbsp;look at&nbsp;its most important details. Almost all street signs are fixed inside gilded frames.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/chiari2013\/chiari10.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/chiari2013\/chiari10b.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Chiari\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka11\"><\/a>In&nbsp;the windows of&nbsp;many buildings in&nbsp;the centre&nbsp;I noticed Christmas decorations that are always of&nbsp;the same kind: white bears under a&nbsp;lamp, or&nbsp;a&nbsp;white pine tree.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/chiari2013\/chiari11.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Chiari\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka12\"><\/a>Some shop windows are also decorated in&nbsp;a&nbsp;stylistically similar way. I&nbsp;do not know what explanation to&nbsp;give for such uniformity: a&nbsp;lack of&nbsp;imagination, a&nbsp;municipal regulation, or&nbsp;a&nbsp;shortage of&nbsp;decorations on&nbsp;the market?<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/chiari2013\/chiari12.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Chiari\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka13\"><\/a>Let&nbsp;us then try to&nbsp;see whether the local dead are accommodated in&nbsp;a&nbsp;slightly nicer environment. At&nbsp;first glance, the cemetery looks promising.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/chiari2013\/chiari13.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the cemetery of Chiari\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka14\"><\/a>But of&nbsp;course it&nbsp;is&nbsp;already closed. Whoever altered the old opening-hours sign in&nbsp;this way is&nbsp;a&nbsp;vandal who deserves to&nbsp;be&nbsp;buried alive.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/chiari2013\/chiari14.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"at the cemetery of Chiari\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka15\"><\/a>I&nbsp;did not know that even the dead needed money&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/chiari2013\/chiari15.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"at the cemetery of Chiari\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka16\"><\/a>A&nbsp;few metres from the entrance I&nbsp;noticed an&nbsp;accumulation of&nbsp;suspicious waste&#8230; I&nbsp;do not know whether one day&nbsp;I will have the opportunity to&nbsp;collect heavy objects to&nbsp;take away.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/chiari2013\/chiari16.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"at the cemetery of Chiari\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka17\"><\/a>The landscape that the dead see during their nocturnal walks is&nbsp;soothing.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/chiari2013\/chiari17.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"at the cemetery of Chiari\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka18\"><\/a>All right, let&nbsp;us leave the deceased in&nbsp;peace and return to&nbsp;the living in&nbsp;the city. Chiari is&nbsp;crossed by&nbsp;numerous watercourses, the widest of&nbsp;which are equipped with structures of&nbsp;unknown purpose. What are they for? To&nbsp;haul boats out?<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/chiari2013\/chiari18.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Chiari\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka19\"><\/a>The water in&nbsp;the aforementioned watercourses is&nbsp;relatively clean. The&nbsp;only exception&nbsp;is, of&nbsp;course, the ancient defensive moat surrounding the historic centre.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/chiari2013\/chiari19.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the ancient moat of Chiari\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka20\"><\/a>In&nbsp;the outskirts, on&nbsp;the other hand, I&nbsp;saw many sluice gates (do&nbsp;they have a&nbsp;specific name?), even though some are already out of&nbsp;use, which regulate the amount of&nbsp;water in&nbsp;streams that are now underground. Until now, I&nbsp;had encountered such objects only in&nbsp;agricultural areas.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/chiari2013\/chiari20.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/chiari2013\/chiari20b.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Chiari\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka21\"><\/a>This is&nbsp;an&nbsp;interesting idea: for once, pebbles are used in&nbsp;a&nbsp;sensible way. They allow the watering of&nbsp;trees, prevent the spread of&nbsp;dust, and people are not forced to&nbsp;walk on&nbsp;them.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/chiari2013\/chiari21.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Chiari\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka22\"><\/a>Chiari&rsquo;s bike-sharing system is&nbsp;the same as&nbsp;the ones in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/en\/travel\/lodi2010.05\/#17\">Lodi<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/en\/travel\/finaleligure\/#27\">Finale Ligure<\/a>.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/chiari2013\/chiari22.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the bike sharing of Chiari\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka23\"><\/a>At&nbsp;last, an&nbsp;original pictogram!<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/chiari2013\/chiari23.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"Chiari\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka24\"><\/a>The litter bins are identical to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/en\/travel\/como2012\/#14\">those in&nbsp;Como<\/a>.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/chiari2013\/chiari24.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"a typical waste container of Chiari\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka25\"><\/a>Chiari is&nbsp;the Lombard town with the most extensive use of&nbsp;fractional street numbers.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/chiari2013\/chiari25.jpg\" class=\"slideshow\" onClick=\"return ['https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/chiari2013\/chiari25b.jpg', 'https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/chiari2013\/chiari25c.jpg']\" border=\"0\" title=\"Chiari\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka26\"><\/a>The railway station, which brings our tour of&nbsp;Chiari to&nbsp;an&nbsp;end, has a&nbsp;canopy above the benches that looks like a&nbsp;bench itself. The sign you can see on&nbsp;its nearest side reads: &laquo;No&nbsp;stopping for pedestrians.&raquo; Lovely.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/chiari2013\/chiari26.jpg\" border=\"0\" title=\"the railway station of Chiari\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The photographic account of a tourist visit to Chiari in December 2013.
