Today I&nbsp;am making up&nbsp;for&nbsp;it.<br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka1\"><\/a>On&nbsp;12 September I&nbsp;went to&nbsp;Sirmione (province of&nbsp;Brescia) on&nbsp;Lake Garda. The town, apart from being rather beautiful, is&nbsp;famous for being the birthplace of&nbsp;Catullus.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/sirmione2010\/sirm01.jpg\" title=\"Sirmione\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka2\"><\/a>Who is&nbsp;exploited in&nbsp;every possible way. Tourists must not be&nbsp;disappointed.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/sirmione2010\/sirm02.jpg\" title=\"Sirmione\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka3\"><\/a>Not being a&nbsp;great expert on&nbsp;tourist resorts, I&nbsp;appreciated this free hotel booking system (yes, for me&nbsp;it&nbsp;was something new).<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/sirmione2010\/sirm03.jpg\" title=\"a stand for booking hotels in Sirmione\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka4\"><\/a>In&nbsp;reality, the first steps in&nbsp;the town bring to&nbsp;mind the fine word &laquo;rip-off&raquo;. This is&nbsp;the only civil way to&nbsp;comment on&nbsp;the placement of&nbsp;this five-euro tap.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/sirmione2010\/sirm05.jpg\" title=\"a drinking fountain in Sirmione\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka5\"><\/a>What is&nbsp;more, I&nbsp;hate energy-saving light bulbs and exposed white cables. Especially when they are installed like this:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/sirmione2010\/sirm09.jpg\" title=\"the street lamps in Sirmione\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka6\"><\/a>At&nbsp;first glance things get a&nbsp;bit better with the works of&nbsp;art displayed along the street.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/sirmione2010\/sirm06.jpg\" title=\"art in Sirmione\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka7\"><\/a>But environmentalists sometimes overdo it&nbsp;with the use of&nbsp;recycled plastic:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/sirmione2010\/sirm07.jpg\" title=\"art in Sirmione\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka8\"><\/a>Nothing to&nbsp;say against painting.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/sirmione2010\/sirm08.jpg\" title=\"art in Sirmione\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka9\"><\/a>Italian-style yin and yang:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/sirmione2010\/sirm10.jpg\" title=\"art in Sirmione\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka10\"><\/a>And then the historic centre begins, our real destination. The castle has its own model of&nbsp;street lamps&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/sirmione2010\/sirm11.jpg\" title=\"the castle of Sirmione\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka11\"><\/a>&#8230;and its own house number: everything in&nbsp;order.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/sirmione2010\/sirm12.jpg\" title=\"the castle of Sirmione\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka12\"><\/a>The most interesting part of&nbsp;the castle was closed.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/sirmione2010\/sirm13.jpg\" title=\"the castle of Sirmione\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka13\"><\/a>But the most beautiful part was impossible to&nbsp;hide.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/sirmione2010\/sirm15.jpg\" title=\"the castle of Sirmione\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka14\"><\/a>This would be&nbsp;perfect for a&nbsp;desktop background.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/sirmione2010\/sirm16.jpg\" title=\"the castle of Sirmione\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka15\"><\/a>Discrimination on&nbsp;the beach: those who are missing a&nbsp;leg or&nbsp;have a&nbsp;crooked arm are not allowed to&nbsp;play football.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/sirmione2010\/sirm19.jpg\" title=\"one of the prohibitions in Sirmione\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka16\"><\/a>The town is&nbsp;full of&nbsp;olive trees; at&nbsp;times it&nbsp;seems they are the only plant growing in&nbsp;these parts.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/sirmione2010\/sirm22.jpg\" title=\"Sirmione\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka17\"><\/a>After climbing to&nbsp;the top of&nbsp;a&nbsp;hill and crossing a&nbsp;small olive grove, we&nbsp;reach the archaeological museum. In&nbsp;theory it&nbsp;should display the results of&nbsp;the excavations of&nbsp;Catullus&rsquo;s &laquo;grottoes&raquo;. Photography inside is&nbsp;forbidden: an&nbsp;absolutely reasonable measure, given that there is&nbsp;nothing to&nbsp;photograph.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/sirmione2010\/sirm24.jpg\" title=\"the archaeological museum of Sirmione\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka18\"><\/a>According to&nbsp;the information signs, even the remains of&nbsp;the &laquo;grottoes&raquo; themselves may not be&nbsp;photographed. Do&nbsp;you think anyone follows the ban?<br \/>\nHere we&nbsp;can see the rocks and the bases of&nbsp;the columns.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/sirmione2010\/sirm25.jpg\" title=\"the caves of Catullus in Sirmione\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka19\"><\/a>The only fresco that has miraculously survived (even if&nbsp;barely visible) is&nbsp;protected by&nbsp;a&nbsp;useless roof.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/sirmione2010\/sirm26.jpg\" title=\"the caves of Catullus in Sirmione\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka20\"><\/a>How could one not become a&nbsp;poet with a&nbsp;view like this from the window?<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/sirmione2010\/sirm27.jpg\" title=\"the caves of Catullus in Sirmione\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka21\"><\/a>I&nbsp;would have written my&nbsp;first poem in&nbsp;the shade of&nbsp;that tree.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/sirmione2010\/sirm28.jpg\" title=\"the caves of Catullus in Sirmione\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka22\"><\/a>Unfortunately, over twenty-two centuries the house has suffered damage.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/sirmione2010\/sirm29.jpg\" title=\"the caves of Catullus in Sirmione\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka23\"><\/a>We&nbsp;can only imagine how large the windows were&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/sirmione2010\/sirm30.jpg\" title=\"the caves of Catullus in Sirmione\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka24\"><\/a>What the ceiling looked like&#8230;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/sirmione2010\/sirm31.jpg\" title=\"the caves of Catullus in Sirmione\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka25\"><\/a>And what the overall proportions were like.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/sirmione2010\/sirm32.jpg\" title=\"the caves of Catullus in Sirmione\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka26\"><\/a>At&nbsp;this point we&nbsp;can also return to&nbsp;the town. When you are in&nbsp;the centre, it&nbsp;is&nbsp;impossible not to&nbsp;notice the castle, even though it&nbsp;is&nbsp;small.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/sirmione2010\/sirm33.jpg\" title=\"the old town of Sirmione\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka27\"><\/a>Just as&nbsp;it&nbsp;is&nbsp;impossible not to&nbsp;notice that it&nbsp;has been somewhat modernised to&nbsp;satisfy tourists.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/sirmione2010\/sirm36.jpg\" title=\"the castle of Sirmione\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka28\"><\/a>But it&nbsp;is&nbsp;also interesting to&nbsp;wander a&nbsp;bit through the streets.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/sirmione2010\/sirm38.jpg\" title=\"the center Sirmione\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka29\"><\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/sirmione2010\/sirm39.jpg\" title=\"il centro di Sirmione\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka29\"><\/a>When the lake is&nbsp;not in&nbsp;view (often it&nbsp;feels like being by&nbsp;the sea), one has the impression of&nbsp;being in&nbsp;a&nbsp;city of&nbsp;central Italy, but with a&nbsp;lot of&nbsp;greenery.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/sirmione2010\/sirm41.jpg\" title=\"the center of Sirmione\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka31\"><\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/sirmione2010\/sirm42.jpg\" title=\"il centro di Sirmione\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka30\"><\/a>According to&nbsp;the plaque, Maria Callas lived in&nbsp;this villa in&nbsp;the 1950s. But nothing can be&nbsp;seen from the street.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/sirmione2010\/sirm45.jpg\" title=\"the villa of Maria Callas in Sirmione\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka31\"><\/a>&laquo;Terme Catullo&raquo; is&nbsp;a&nbsp;name behind which there is&nbsp;nothing. Except tourists&rsquo; money wasted unnecessarily.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/sirmione2010\/sirm47.jpg\" title=\"Terme Catullo in Sirmione\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\n<a name=\"fotka32\"><\/a>All in&nbsp;all, it&nbsp;is&nbsp;a&nbsp;lovely place that I&nbsp;recommend. But do&nbsp;not go&nbsp;there by&nbsp;car: you will spend three hours looking for a&nbsp;free parking space.<br \/>\nI&nbsp;could add that Sirmione is&nbsp;the town with the greatest variety of&nbsp;street lamps and litter bins, but I&nbsp;am not sure you would appreciate&nbsp;it&#8230; I&nbsp;will just allow myself to&nbsp;show you the ugliest bin among those I&nbsp;saw:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eugigufo.net\/travelfoto\/sirmione2010\/sirm53.jpg\" title=\"a waste container in Sirmione\" border=\"0\"><br \/>\nThat is&nbsp;all for now.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&nbsp;has been a&nbsp;long time since&nbsp;I last wrote about my&nbsp;travels?
