What is the «Singerus»?<\/h2>\n

\n«Singerus<\/a>» is a tool that allows you to determine the year and place of production of an antique Singer sewing machine.<\/p>\n

Where is the serial number located?<\/h2>\n

\nIt is very easy to find its serial number on an old Singer sewing machine. It is shown on a gold plate at the base of a rack with a wheel and a handle. Here is a concrete example:

\nRemember that the serial number of your Singer probably starts with one or two letters: they are an integral part of the serial number and are important for determining the age and origin of your sewing machine.
\nIf there is no serial number plate in the specified place, two things must be done:
\n1) make sure that it is not hit and then not lost (if it is lost, there is nothing I can do to help you);
\n2) look for an alternative type of die on the wheel stand itself (it must also be clearly visible there).

How and why was the tool made?<\/h2>\n

\nThe very idea of creating such a tool came to my mind quite a long time ago, in the mid-2000s, when I wondered about the age of my grandmother’s Singer. But I never expected the idea to turn out to be so original: both then and now, the world’s internet offers a long list of serial number intervals to determine the year and place of manufacture of a sewing machine. That is to say, we are offered to use the Internet as a paper encyclopedia: drive your finger along the cells of the table as on the roots of thick volumes and think for a long time about the interval of numbers (as letters on the roots) where the information that interests us is placed.
\n«No,» I thought, «in the 21st century, this is not the right way to present information».
\nAnd as soon as I had enough free time, I wrote a simple (and a bit boring) PHP script. I hope it will make life easier for more than one home archaeologist or antique dealer \ud83d\ude42
\nCreating a database of several hundred million entries seemed pointless to me in this case: it would really only be useful to store serial numbers, but not unique information for each individual sewing machine. If you think I am wrong, write me about it.

What are the sources of the information?<\/h2>\n

\nAs the only one — at the moment! — the source of information on the distribution of production of old Singers by year is a table from the official website of the company.
\nSome of Singer’s factory addresses are taken from old reference books and telephone books available on Google Books.
\nUnfortunately, I cannot name the above sources in sufficient detail. Therefore, I will be eternally grateful to those who will tell me the sources of the following information:
\n— the Singer sewing machine serial numbers register with the names \/ model numbers;
\n— addresses of Singer factories in Buenos Aires, Campinas, Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Santiago, Bogota, Taita, Bonier-sur-Seine, Wittenberg, Karlsruhe, Utsunomiya, Keretaro, Karachi, Lima, Taizhong, Istanbul and Anderson;
\n— a register of serial numbers with corresponding years of production for 1851–1870;
\n— any other interesting information.
